Cable Failure Signs

How to Know You Have a Broken Cable

Door Hangs Unevenly

One side sits higher than the other. This is a safety issue. Do not operate.

Loud Snapping Sound

A sudden loud snap or crack during operation. Cable just broke under tension.

Door Drops Suddenly

Door falls or sags on one side when opening. Cable failure causes immediate drop.

Frayed or Visible Cable

See strands of cable or rust forming. Cable is wearing out. Replacement needed soon.

Door Stuck Open or Closed

Door will not operate at all. Broken cable prevents movement of the door.

Grinding Noise with Misalignment

Cable rubbed track. Door rubbing metal. Professional realignment required.

Cable Technology

Types of Garage Door Cables

Lift Cables (For Torsion Spring Systems)

Most common in Edmond. Attached to the bottom of the door and wind on a pulley as the spring unwinds. Typically 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch diameter galvanized steel. Rated for 10,000 to 15,000 cycles before fatigue failure.

We use high-grade galvanized cables rated for 15,000+ cycles. Standard cables: $65 to $85 per cable. Upgraded cables: $100 to $125 per cable.

Extension Cables (For Spring Systems)

Used with extension springs on sides of the door. Typically 1/4-inch diameter. These stretch and compress as the door moves. More vulnerable to weather and ice buildup in Oklahoma winters.

Extension cables: $50 to $75 per cable. We always install safety cables (redundant cables) on extension spring systems to prevent injury if a cable breaks during operation.
