Garage Door Sensor Repair in Edmond, OK
Garage Door Edmond repairs and replaces garage door safety sensors in Edmond, Oklahoma. If your door reverses before closing, the opener light blinks, or the wall button works but the remote does not, the safety sensors are likely the problem. We service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman sensors.
Common Sensor Problems
If you notice any of these symptoms, your safety sensors likely need attention.
Blinking Amber Light
The sending sensor (amber on LiftMaster and Chamberlain) flashes instead of staying solid. This usually indicates a wiring issue or a failed LED.
Door Reverses at Floor
The door starts to close but reverses just before reaching the floor. The infrared beam is breaking at a low point, often due to sensor bracket shift.
Intermittent Closing
The door closes sometimes but not others. Sunlight interference, vibration from traffic, or loose 22 AWG bell wire connections can cause this.
One Eye Is Dark
One sensor has no light at all. This points to a broken wire, a bad connection at the opener terminal, or a failed sensor unit.
Damaged Wires
Sensor wires run along the floor near the track and are vulnerable to damage from lawn equipment, rodents, or foot traffic. Nicked or cut wires break the circuit.
How Safety Sensors Work
Garage door safety sensors use an infrared beam that spans the width of the door opening, mounted 4 to 6 inches above the floor. One sensor sends the beam (the amber eye on LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers) and the other receives it (the green eye). When the beam is unbroken, the opener is allowed to close the door. If anything interrupts the beam, the opener stops and reverses the door.
This system became mandatory in 1993 under the UL 325 safety standard, enforced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Every automatic garage door opener sold in the United States must include photo-eye sensors as part of its entrapment protection system.
The sensors connect to the opener using 22 AWG bell wire, the same low-voltage wire used in doorbells and thermostats. Each sensor has two wires: one for the white (common) terminal and one for the black/white striped (signal) terminal on the opener. On LiftMaster models, the most common replacement sensor is the 41A5034.

Sensor Alignment and Replacement Cost
Alignment
$75 - $125
Includes repositioning both sensors, checking wire connections at the opener terminals, testing the infrared beam, and verifying proper auto-reverse function. Most alignment jobs take 20 to 30 minutes.
Replacement
$100 - $175
Includes a new pair of sensors, wiring, mounting brackets, and full testing. The LiftMaster 41A5034 is the most common replacement sensor we install. Genie, Chamberlain, and Craftsman sensors are also in stock.
Good to know: If your sensors need replacement and your opener is more than 10 years old, ask about upgrading to a new LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener with built-in Wi-Fi and battery backup. Sometimes a full opener upgrade is more cost-effective than patching an aging system. See our opener repair page for details.
Federal Safety Requirements
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has required entrapment protection on all residential garage door openers since 1993. The UL 325 standard governs these safety requirements and mandates two forms of protection: auto-reverse upon contact with an obstruction, and photo-eye sensors that detect objects in the door path.
- UL 325 requires photo-eye sensors on all automatic openers manufactured after January 1, 1993.
- The auto-reverse mechanism must activate within 2 seconds of contact with a 1-inch obstruction on the floor.
- You cannot legally bypass or disconnect safety sensors on a residential garage door opener.
- Entrapment protection saves lives. The CPSC documented over 60 deaths from garage door entrapment before the mandate.
- Annual testing of the auto-reverse function is recommended by the International Door Association (IDA).
